Convalescence and rehabilitation are both important components of recovery after surgery or serious illness. While both measures aim to get you back to everyday fitness, there are significant differences between them. These mainly concern the question of who covers the costs.
Rehabilitation is an inpatient stay that is financed by your health insurance company by means of a cost approval. A rehabilitation stay usually takes place immediately after a hospital stay, and you will be assigned to a clinic that corresponds to your rehabilitation goals. Depending on your insurance class, you will benefit from various hotel services (similar to a hospital stay), such as a single room or a free choice of menu. The focus is on an intensive therapy programme, both in groups and in individual settings. Our partner ZURZACH Care Rehaklinik Sonnmatt Luzern specialises in musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation.
A spa stay is similar to outpatient treatment in a hotel setting. You decide which qualified establishment you would like to use for comprehensive medical, therapeutic and nursing services. This requires a doctor's prescription for spa treatment. This regulates the outpatient billing of nursing, therapeutic and medical services with your health insurance company. You only pay the excess and any franchise.
You generally pay for hotel services such as rooms and meals yourself, as you choose the hotel and room category yourself. Your insurance class is irrelevant in an outpatient setting. Depending on your insurance model (especially supplementary insurance), you will be reimbursed for part of your spa stay. Clarify the services included with your health insurance provider in advance. Depending on the model, the contribution towards a spa stay can range from CHF 20 to CHF 200 per day.
